How Lead Generation Works
Understanding Search Ranking (1/3)
Search engines can seem overly complex, but the basics haven’t changed much. Organic search ranking is built upon three measures:
1) Keyword Frequency
First generation search engines included Altavista, Yahoo, and Lycos. Search results were based on the occurrence of a search term on a website. The rankings were fairly easily manipulated.
2) Inbound Links
The next generation of search was dominated by Google’s algorithm, known as PageRank. PageRank quantifies the number of links to a website as a measure of its importance. Basically the more inbound links the better; but that was possible to manipulate as well, so it’s not quite that simple anymore.
3) Load Time
Google remains the biggest game in town, and load time is the newest major addition to the Google algorithm. It’s simple; if a page doesn’t load fast it negatively impact search ranking.
